The name of our theater company came from a teen-age girl interviewed for our debut production about the lives of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered youth. Having never had an adult gay role model, she talked about the impossibility of envisioning what her own life would be like: ”It’s like…imagine your future taking place on the moon. How can I picture what my house will look like on the moon? I’ve never been to the moon, nobody’s ever tried to build a house at such low gravity. How do I know whether to picture it on the surface, or floating? …Trees and grass, or just rocks?” This incredibly powerful metaphor also captured what we were trying to accomplish with our theater company: We wanted our work to occupy a frontier where few had been before, and to build on seemingly inhospitable terrain - to make a home for those stories which were not being told.
